4oth Reunion Selection criteria
When we decided to go ahead with the idea of selecting a 40th Reunion ALL Star Team for the Bomaderry Australian Football Club, we realised that it was not going to be easy and that a number of good players would no doubt miss out. As Rats and I have been in or around the Club the longest, we thought that we were probably the best 2 people to make a calculated judgement, and whilst you may not totally agree with our decisions, it is by our reckoning, the best & fairest process we could come up with.
Yes we understand that the standard varies from year to year and that the competition was probably a lot stronger in the early years, but the players of today are no less worthy than the guys going around in the 70’s or 80’s. So how did we go about it? First we established the minimum criteria, which we both agreed needed to be at least 3 years participation in 1st Grade. Unfortunately that ruled out a lot of good footballers, Doug Robbins, Steve Keeling, Bruce Fielke, Leo McIntyre & Bernie Browne to name just a few.
Using the records that we had available, which unfortunately are only accurate from 1977 onwards, we put together a list of eligible players from each decade. We then gathered all the information that we could find such as individual achievements etc. which combined with our personal thoughts and recollections, we then selected 10 best players from each decade. Yes we understand that a lot of guys played in more than one era and where this occurred, we chose the period in which they played the majority of their football.
From the 40 players selected, we then sought some independent thoughts and from all the information that we had at our disposal, we sat down and selected a team of 22 players which we both believe would serve the Club extremely well and be an absolute honour to be a part of. I reiterate, there are a lot of players that can consider themselves unlucky not to have been selected. In fact there are probably half a dozen young guys running around at the moment that wouldn’t look out of place in this team, but we had a job to do and I think the team that we are about to announce is pretty bloody good.
